Glass Recycling Best Practices
To effectively recycle glass, the following conditions must be met:
- Before placing glass in your glass recycling bin, ensure the glass is rinsed and clean. Food-waste residues will attract wildlife and harm the ecological integrity of the Bow Valley.
- Most glass containers have non-glass components, such as paper labels or metal lids. These contaminants must be removed from your glass before you recycle it. Bins with metal lids will end up in the landfill.
- Ceramic materials (plates, bowls, teacups) are no longer recyclable in the Bow Valley. To ensure glass is recycled, do NOT place ceramics and other contaminates in glass bins.
Please note that all colours of glass can be recycled in your bin (clear, green, brown, etc.) as long as the glass is free of contaminants. Keep in mind, most brown and green glass containers are refundable beverage containers such as beer bottles. We recommend you place these bottles in your refund bin.
Light Bulb Recycling
Unlike other light bulbs, fluorescent lights (long tube-shaped bulbs) contain mercury vapour, a harmful toxin that must be recycled with great care.
It is crucial that customers identify and wrap their fluorescent bulbs and group them separately from other types of light bulbs.
Clients should group fluorescent tubes and wrap them together with tape and bubble wrap, or place them in a cardboard box. We will pick up the dead bulbs and ensure they are disposed of properly, thus limiting harmful mercury exposure to people and the environment.
Using the services of Flying Pigs Recycling has greatly enhanced our efforts in recycling and diversion of waste over a period of several years.
